Volunteers in Pennsylvania Use Lake Observer App for Water Quality Monitoring

In 2020, the Poconos Lake Ecological Observatory Network (PLEON) volunteer monitoring program began using the Lake Observer app to record water quality observations on Lake Wallenpaupack, Pennsylvania. The PLEON Water Quality in Action program generated 710 data entries using the Lake Observer app making a valuable contribution to Lake Observer's global database.

“Testing and feedback from groups such as PLEON have been essential in the development of Lake Observer,” said Kathleen C. Weathers, Senior Scientist and Principal Investigator for the app project.

Through a partnership with the North American Lake Management Society (NALMS), the PLEON data submitted via Lake Observer is also being shared with the USEPA Water Quality Exchange (WQX) and Water Quality Portal (WQP) federal databases via the Ambient Water Quality Monitoring System.

The Pocono Lake Ecological Observatory Network is a regional lake monitoring program organized by Lacawac Sanctuary and focused on educating the public and lake associations on water quality and lake management.
